Who is Eligible? Any person 18 years of older who wants help with basic reading or math skills and is willing to participate is eligible. In order for people younger that 18 to qualify, they must be at least 16 years old, have officially withdrawn from school AND possess a valid work permit. These guidelines are mandated by the Ohio Department of Education ABLE, which provides the literacy council with partial funding. Tutoring Sessions: Sessions are private and confidential. They are scheduled at a time and location that is convenient to both tutor and student. Our Services: Tutors teach learners basic reading and math skills. In addition, they may provide instruction in the following areas: spelling, writing, social studies, current events, science, computer literacy, critical thinking, job skills, and life skills. We can also help students study for the written portion of the driver’s test. The type of instruction is determined by the individual learner’s needs and interests. Adults with Learning Disabilities: We realize that many of those adults we serve may be struggling with a learning disability, such as auditory or visual dyslexia. We have special assessment tools at the literacy council and are prepared to offer specialized services to those adults who learn differently. We cannot provide a learning disabilities diagnosis, but we can screen for certain disorders and make appropriate referrals. We provide strategies for learning to serve adults with reading difficulties. |
