Volunteer!

Help fight the battle of illiteracy! The Pickaway County Literacy Council depends on volunteer tutors to teach adult learners one-to-one to improve their skills. Most tutors meet weekly with their students at the literacy council office or another convenient meeting place.

Training Requirements:

Tutors complete a one day workshop prior to being assigned a student. The workshop teaches volunteers how to use literacy council teaching materials to best serve adult students and helps them develop sensitivity to adults with learning difficulties. All training is provided at no cost to the tutor.

Method of Instruction:

The literacy council uses many workbook serried for our adult instruction, but we encourage a multi-sensory, multi-modality approach to learning. Material and manipulatives are on hand to service our learners in the ways that they learn best. These resources enable the adult learner to set his or her own pace in learning and determine how the skills we teach fit into their daily lives.

Tutor Support:

Throughout the year the literacy council holds several tutor training meetings to offer further help to our tutors. These meetings are voluntary, but encouraged. The staff at the literacy council are also available any time to offer help and encouragement.
